Elinore Schnurr
About the Work: WE ARE ONE
Groups of figures and fragments of urban life on the streets and transparent elements reflect from the many windows that line the sidewalks. Altogether the people begin to be experienced as one because of these quick juxtapositions as we pass by. The many are experienced as one in their motion.
About Elinore Schnurr: Elinore Schnurr is a figurative painter in and of New York City. Her current series of paintings are composed of moving figures constantly rearranging and overtaking the spaces around them, shuffling what just was and what is coming.
After earning a BFA degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and spending six months studying the great masters of painting in the museums, churches and galleries in Europe, Elinore moved to New York City where she has lived and has pursued a painting career since 1962.
Schnurr was in many group exhibitions, such as the annual “National Midyear Exhibition” at the Butler Institute of American Art (winning the 2nd Place Award in 2002); and the bi-annual Juried Exhibitions at the National Academy of Design (1986 – 1990, and awarded the Thomas B. Clarke Award in 1986). Schnurr was included in many museum exhibitions over the years and had solo exhibition at many public venues.
Her gallery representations included the Atlanta Art Gallery in Atlanta, GA; DFN Gallery in SOHO, NYC; Capricorn Galleries in Bethesda, MD; among others. She had a Mid Atlantic-NEA Fellowship (1994); and a CAPS Fellowship NYSCA Grant (1979).
Since 1990, Schnurr has mostly pursued clients and sold paintings as an independent contractor. She has placed paintings in museum collections, such as the Smithsonian Museum of American Art and the Cleveland Museum, and several hundred in corporate and notable private collections. And in 2013 – 2015 Schnurr did major, commissioned paintings for lobbies of residential towers: TF Cornerstone in Long Island City and Forest City Ratner in Brooklyn.
