About the Work: ALL EYES ON LIC
Four eyes depict the diverse forms of life which live together in LIC. A human eye represents LIC residents. A dog eye represents LIC having the highest per capita ratio of dogs to humans in NYC. A fish eye represents the waterways in LIC. And a robotic eye represents the influx of hi tech in LIC and its future.
Each eye is visually and conceptually interconnected with other eyes painted, as well as connected to the eyes of the viewers. The eyes are an ecosystem of land and water. Each eye is essential to the vibrant life of the Long Island City region. Viewers of all ages will recognize and relate to the bright hyper realistic eye spheres.
About Bonnie Astor: Color, textures, people and places interact in Bonnie’s artworks. Dynamic viewpoints and artistic styles keep her artwork fresh and intriguing. Primarily a painter, printmaker and mixed media artist, photography has been added to her artistic palette.
Bonnie Astor's paintings and mixed media artworks have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, Athens, Greece and Venice, Italy. Her artwork was chosen by non-profit organizations for women's empowerment, education and access to health care projects. As an art activist, she leads community workshops benefiting people of all ages with disabilities, mental illness, homelessness and in transition. Both a Master’s in Studio Art ( NYU) and a Master’s in Nursing (Rutgers) inform Bonnie’s artwork and interactions with people around the globe. A watershed experience as a nurse consultant at Sharada Dhanvanteri Hospital in south India inspired her to use her skills and artwork to envision a better world for women and children around the world.
Her latest collaboration is her blog, Art BreakOUT. Working independently outside mainstream Western culture, a broad range of talented artists remains unnoticed. Some are self-taught; some are emotionally or physically challenged; and others simply choose to work outside standard cultural norms. It is the mission of ART BreakOUT to provide opportunities for these artists to share their skills and visions with others – both online and in varied settings.
