Matt Keegan: what was & what is

For SculptureCenter's fourth annual Public Process program, the museum has commissioned Matt Keegan whose 8 foot tall rectangular structure will be installed in Long Island City's Court Square Park from May 12-August 18. The name of the work, what was & what is, is pulled from a developer's comment in a 2017 New York Times article on the longtime speculative interest for urban development in the area. The structure made with three walls, 2 transparent and 1 mirrored, is empty with an image of an enlarged dollhouse view on the floor of an empty one-bedroom rental apartment – almost identical to the units available across Jackson Ave in the Hayden building available for around $3,500/month.
