Happy Pride Month! We’re highlighting LGBTQIA+ owned and operated businesses in the neighborhood to celebrate. Meet Solidcore LIC, located at 25-01 Jackson Ave, Suite 104.
We spoke with Head Coach + Manager Juan:
Q: Can you share a little bit about your background, your career, and your path to operating a business here in Long Island City?
Juan: From professional dancer (even backing up Lady Gaga!) in LA to fitness coach, I craved a career with purpose. Coaching at SolidCore ignited a passion. Eventually I came back to New York City, my childhood stomping grounds here in LIC! It felt like fate. Now, as a head coach and community manager, I lead a fantastic team and connect with amazing clients, all while giving back to the neighborhood that shaped me.
Q: Why did you choose to come to Long Island City?
Juan: LIC felt like a natural next step. In my early 20s, dancing was my life. Now, in my 30s, I’m more intentional with my connections. Long Island City has a very diverse community and felt like the perfect place to build meaningful relationships and contribute to something bigger.
Q: What do you want the community to know about your business?
Juan: At our studio, we believe in creating a welcoming space for everyone. No matter your background or identity, you’ll be celebrated and supported by our coaches, myself, and our incredible Area Manager, Inger, who’s a strong LGBTQ+ ally. We want you to feel seen, heard, and empowered to reach your fitness goals under the blue lights! Remember, the hardest part is simply walking through the door. Once you’re here, let’s have some fun and push yourself to become the best version of yourself!
Q: What is your favorite thing about Long Island City?
Juan: Long Island City’s energy is infectious! The tight-knit community here made me realize that SolidCore belongs in the neighborhood. Our pop-up at LIC Springs solidified it (pun intended!). It just feels amazing to be back here, building a fitness community that thrives on that same positive energy.
Q: Last question, as we are celebrating Pride Month, what does that mean to you?
Juan: This Pride Month is particularly meaningful for me. It’s a chance to celebrate the younger me who knew I was different but felt pressured to hide it. It took time, but I’m finally comfortable embracing and expressing my true self wholeheartedly. Pride is about accepting that journey and celebrating the vibrant LGBTQ+ community that supports us in being authentically ourselves.
